mandate

MANDATE

articule is an artist-run centre dedicated to the presentation of new art practices that are socially and aesthetically engaged. Our artistic direction is founded on the shared belief that the relationship between the creative and the political is not contingent but necessary. articule's activities reflect the constant transformations of this relationship. We support a range of discursive and alternative activities that test the limits of aesthetic gesture, promote dialogue and build networks with artists' collectives and other organizations. Our open structure encourages the direct participation of an active membership and we recognize the importance of directing this vitality to give it the cohesion and professional bearing it requires.

PROGRAMMING

articule has three different programming channels :

EXHIBITIONS
The programming in the gallery presents a selection of challenging and thoughtful exhibitions from engaging contemporary artists. These presentations are complemented with other activities such as artist talks and publications that provide accessible forums for exchange.

SPECIAL PROJECTS
Special Projects submissions are reviewed throughout the year on an ongoing basis. The Special Projects' programming has a flexible structure and responds quickly to needs and issues as they arise. The goal of this program is to build new alliances and support independently produced initiatives, often off-site, (e.g.: public interventions, performances, artist books, zines, music events, public talks, etc.). It functions as an avenue for diverse practices and event-based activities. Support comes in various forms including: financial, promotional and logistical, access to the centre's equipment, administrative infrastructure, and venue.

CURATORIAL PROJECTS
The Board of Directors initiates or approves a major Curatorial Project each year. Our objective is to reinforce or complement the regular program of exhibitions, and address the overall goals of the centre in an ongoing dialogue about social and aesthetic issues.

PUBLISHING

From the start, articule has been dedicated to the production of publications that extend our program of activities into the arena of historical and theoretical discourse. Some of our regular publications include an annual Programming Booklet, with visual documentation and short bilingual texts tracing all the activities of the programming season; Exhibition Pamphlets, which contextualize selected exhibitions through the writings of authors, art historians or invited artists; and other artist books and publications co-produced with help from Special Projects.
