A project by Yvette Poorter (The Netherlands)
In collaboration with Quartier Éphémère (http://www.fonderiedarling.org)
Residencies: August 27 - September 5, 2008
Closing event and discussion: September 5, 2008 from 5pm to 7pm @ articule
Knock on Woods International Residency is a nomadic temporary site that dedicates itself to offering local and international artists a sense of rootedness and respite from a hectic and bewildering globalism. After a number of European stops in Holland, France and Portugal, Yvette Poorter is now touring the project in a series of Canadian cities including Victoria (Open Space), Vancouver (Helen Pitt Gallery), Kingston (Modern Fuel), Toronto (Mercer Union) and now Montreal.
During first five days of its stay, Knock on Woods will be situated on the sidewalk outside Quartier Éphémère in Old Montreal. This site will be easily accessible to the public while selected artists participate in a series of four to 24 hour residencies in which any kind of work/non-work is advocated: out-come-based projects, pointless explorations, rest... For the following five days, Knock on Woods will be tucked away in in a backyard on the Plateau Mont-Royal, offering it's resident artists a more reclusive environment.
you are invited to join us at articule on September 5th for an intimate closing celebration of Knock on Woods and an informal discussion with the curator Yvette Poorter. The event will include a looped screening of A Nothering of Means - documentary from the woods archives, a dreamy document of past residencies and projects, as well as an opportunity to meet the artists who took part in the Montreal installment of Knock on Woods.
Yvette Poorter is a Canadian/Dutch artist currently based in Rotterdam. Her works have been shown extensively in North America and Europe, as well as in Japan. She often works collaboratively doing sculptural interventions, time-based installations, bookworks and videos. Knock on Woods is the third incarnation of a "woods" residency that she has done since growing a forest from seeds in her Montreal apartment in 2002.
