Credos is a series of table-top presentations around the theme of beliefs (or, credos; also root word of credit) to be held in church bazaars around Laval and Montreal. The theme of belief is important because of the curiously anachronistic-feeling centrality it has in debates around the proper identity of Western democracies today. That sounds exaggerated, but just think of the discourses around refugees, “Canadian (and Quebec) values,” laïcité (secularism) and the lurking white supremacism and lurches toward ethno-nationalism sweeping across Europe and North America. If, in some small playful ways, we can open up the possibility for a plurality of perspectives and questions on belief in art, we might approach de-sanctifying and expanding identity, which may be another way to access the sacred. As such, the market context refers tongue-in-cheek to ideas of religious economy, where adherents are understood as consumers of religions, along the lines of supply and demand. However, the intention is not only to offer a range of competing pitches nor to belittle religion as consumerist magic trick. We also want to explore with artists and market goers what value belief plays in the experience of art works, in a vernacular space that doesn’t always obey strict market laws—after all, we love flea markets precisely because they overturn standardized market values. The participants in Credos engage the air of negotiation, curiosity and good faith that characterizes these spaces.
