Mile End Art Map 2014
22 Feb 2014

In 2007, artist-run centre articule created the Mile End Art Map with the goal of highlighting the vitality and diversity of the neighborhood, one rich with independent arts and cultural spaces. The making of a new edition of the map in 2014 presented the opportunity to critically address the changes in Mile End. articule invited current and former Mile End residents, and those of surrounding neighbourhoods, to contribute to this edition of the map through a collective mapping of past and current experiences of the area. We asked people to consider these questions:

  • Are arts & culture allies of people of different classes?
  • In the context of gentrification and austerity in all sectors, how are “diversity” and “vitality” affected and/or redefined?
  • How do they manifest themselves today and how would cartography contribute to the process of keeping the neighbourhood indeed alive?

We hope you too consider these questions while exploring the Mile End.

The creation of the 4th Mile End Art Map was made possible thanks to generous contributions made by artist-run centres, galleries, and independent cultural businesses presented in this pamphlet. To make a donation or for more info visit www.articule.org
