Mareikura  Lisa Reihana (New Zealand)
18 Oct 2014 to 16 Nov 2014

As part of the eleventh edition of The HTMlles, Feminist Festival of Media Arts and Digital Culture, ZÉR0 FUTUR{E}, articule is proud to present the first exhibition in Quebec of work by Lisa Reihana, a Maori artist at the forefront of multi-media practice in New Zealand. Reihana has received international recognition for work that addresses social, political, and cultural issues and is an important and influential figure for emerging artists in the Pacific region.

This exhibition will combine photography, video, and animation produced by the artist over the past 20 years. In her practice, Reihana explores aesthetics, mythology, philosophy, and traditional Maori pedagogy from a contemporary viewpoint. She combines visual referents from Maori culture with fantasy, advertising and video games to produce works that reflect on the construction of identity through issues relating to colonialism, feminism, power, and representation.

articule is also pleased to work in collaboration with AXENÉO, who will present in Pursuit of Venus, an impressive fresco-style video installation that addresses issues surrounding sovereignty, self-determination, and the representation of the body in relation to aboriginals in a colonial context.

Lisa Reihana has carried out numerous artist residencies and her work has been shown in exhibitions and at arts fairs around the world, including: Native Portrait at the Museo Laboratorio di Arte Contemporanea, Rome, Italy; Global Feminisms at the Brooklyn Museum, New York, USA; Pasifika Styles, Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology, Cambridge, England; the Asia-Pacific Triennial at Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane, Australia; and the Liverpool Biennale, England. She has undertaken numerous public art commissions, including a series of Maori Commissions with Henriata Nicholas, her co-founder at Kupenga Design. Digital Marae was short-listed for the Aukland Art Gallery’s Walters Prize (2008), and the Anne Landa Digital Art Award at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Australia (2009).

Reihana is actively involved in New Zealand’s cultural scene and currently sits on several committees, including the Haerewa Maori Advisory Committee at the Auckland Art Gallery, the Wairau Maori Advisory Panel at the Hunderwasser Museum, Vienna, and the Prague Quadrennial 2015 Selection Committee. She has lectured for 20 years and given conferences at the Indigenous Photo-Media Symposium (2012) presented by the Centre for Contemporary Photography and the Australian Centre for Moving Image, Melbourne, and at Global Photography Now (2007) at Tate Modern, London, England.
