A bilingual publication with texts by Susie Major and Randall Anderson with an introduction by Marcus Miller

Artists: Carolee Schneemann, Luis Jacob, Demian Petryshyn, Michelle Gay and Caroline Lathan-Stiefel

We are pleased to announce the launching of the publication Immersion/Immersive, based on the thematic exhibition series presented as part of articule's 2005-2006 program. Montreal writers Susan Major and Randall Anderson were invited to explore the nature and utility of "immersive" as cultural terminology and to reflect on the works of the exhibiting artists in that light.

In the fall 2005, we were delighted and honoured to present new work by Carolee Schneemann as part of Mois de la Photo à Montréal. What gave her work the currency it seemed to have for us, was that it was immersive. It embodied the kind of total engagement that contemporary purveyors of new media promise. With the theme established, a call for proposals was formulated and works by Luis Jacob (Toronto), Demian Petryshyn (London, ON), Michelle Gay (Toronto) and Caroline Lathan-Stiefel (Montreal) were selected, each exploring different aspects of the immersive. Through this series of exhibitions and this publication, which brings these various explorations together, we hope to stretch contemporary preoccupations with technological possibility, and reinvest the immersive with material and social content.
