During her research residency at articule, Emmanuelle Jacques will build a meeting and workspace where portrait sittings are excuses to engage in conversations with artist-mothers about their ambitions, the obstacles they face, and solutions for improving their creative conditions. The intimate and sensitive subject of maternity raises political issues, which Jacques addresses through a feminist and libertarian perspective: economic exchanges, power relations, work organisation, DIY culture, freedom seeking, oppression resistance. Without assuming the rehabilitation of the female figure in historical discourse, Jacques appropriates the commemorative role of money, whose symbolic burden is here linked to economic power and feminist struggles, and turns it on its head to articulate a critique of this long-established trading system. How are mothers participating in the creation of wealth? And the artists? What is the value of unpaid work? Can one make their own space in the current economic model? And in the art milieu? What are the alternative models? Such questions will lead to the creation of a currency which will be printed and distributed during a subsequent project.

 

Based in Montreal, Emmanuelle Jacques completed a BFA in Visual Arts at UQAM in 2004. She has presented her work, lead workshops, and been an artist-in-residence in several Canadian cities. Her recent work has been part of solo and group exhibitions in the Accès Culture network (Montreal, 2017), at Atelier Circulaire (Montreal, 2016), Maison des arts de Laval (2015), Artist Proof Gallery (Calgary, 2015) and Malaspina Printmakers (Vancouver, 2014). She is also the mother of two young children.
