As part of the exhibition Between Reality and Transcendance by Chun Hua Catherine Dong, articule had the pleasure to present a discussion between the artist and independant curator Zhou Yan.

Chun Hua Catherine Dong is a Chinese-born performance artist living in Canada. She has been invited to perform internationally, notably at the 9th Kaunas Biennial in Lituuania, Infr’ Action International Performance Art Festival in Italy, the 4th International Festival and Conference for Live Art and Performance Studies in Finland, and The International Multimedia Art Festival in Burma. Her performance is listed amongst the “top nine amazing political art projects of 2010” by Art and Threat Magazine, along with international well-known artists such as Rebecca Belmore and Wafaa Bilal. Her current research, “Performance Ethnography: a Method of Inquiry in Research of Visualization,” is supported by Canada Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, Concordia University Faculty of Fine Arts and British Columbia Arts Council.

 

Zhou Yan was born in China and currently lives in Toronto. She holds a Master of Museum Studies from the University of Toronto, and a Bachelor of Chinese Language & Literature from Northwest University, China. As an art curator, she has co-curated The Transformation of Landscape In Canada: The Inside & Outside of Being for Xi’an Art Museum, China, 2014; Through the Body: Lens-based works by Contemporary Chinese Women Artists  for the University of Toronto Art Center, 2014, Earthly Inspiration: The Expression And Process of Craft for Toronto Pearson International Airport 2011. She is also the founder and curator of Montagneau Poetry & Art collaborative project since 2012.

Zhou Yan is interested in socially relevant contemporary art projects that emphasize feminism, the environment and experimental works, and in art programming that addresses cross-cultural and cross-boundary communications. For the past three years, she has devoted herself to dialogue and discourse across Chinese and Canadian art through the organizing of exhibitions and the writing and translating of critical articles.

She is also a poet and translator, who has published translations of Rilke, Ezra Pound, Al Purdy, Roo Borson, John Reibetanz, Andy Patton and many others. Currently she is working on translation of the Pulitzer Prize winner Sharon Olds' Stag’s Leap and The Selected Works of Elizabeth Bishop.
