TAKE UP THE PEN: A HANDWRITTEN WORKSHOP
Handwriting is second only to the voice as the indelible mark of personal expression. It is the result of muscle movement physically pushing a tool across a surface and leaving a mark. However, some might argue that because our sophisticated typing machines write faster and more clearly than a human ever could, handwriting has become obsolete. This begs the question: if mechanical type allows for speed and precision, what particular functions does the act of writing by hand fulfill? What do we stand to lose collectively and individually through the decline/disappearance of handwriting from our visual sphere? What are the connections between hand movement, creativity and image-making? This workshop will discuss these questions and allow participants to share their handwriting-related experiences (ie: the classic elementary school punishment of being forced to write out the same line 100 times). There will also be a practice portion of the workshop, with handwriting exercise sheets provided, and many handwriting-based games! Pens and paper will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring a handwriting implement that they find particularly satisfying.
Soup will be generously donated by Lumière du Mile End.
